Being security conscious is very important. And ensuring that your home is safe and secure is also important.

But at times, there are some home security mistakes you might be making unintentionally. And if you keep making them without correcting them, it could really cost you and your family your lives and properties.

Because, having your home invaded by burglars, can be a terrifying experience. It can alter your sense of security or put your life and the life of your family at risk.

You wouldn’t want that, right?

No home owner with a lovely family would want that.

Therefore, in this post, I will share with you home security mistakes and how you can avoid them.

Shall we begin?

9 Home Security Mistakes and How to Correct Them

Below are the home security mistakes and how to avoid them.

1. Not Keeping Track of Your Keys

One common mistake home owners make is failing to be accountable for their keys. Hiding your keys anywhere near your home can give burglars an easy access to your home. Because an experienced burglar knows that it is the oldest security measure and knows where to check for the keys.

To avoid this, you’ve got to be careful with your keys by ensuring that all copies of your keys are accounted for.

2. Not Securing Your Windows

Windows are one of the easiest ways burglars can use than doors to break into your home. Most times, you go out forgetting to lock them. And this can be risky when it comes to the safety of your home and family.

However, to avoid this mistake, always ensure that you lock all windows not needed to be opened for fresh air at night. Especially whenever you go out, ensure they are all locked. And remember, this is not a precaution—it’s a necessity.

3. Not Keeping Your Doors Locked

It is mandatory that doors should be locked at all times, even if you stepped out for a minute or to get something from a nearby store. But often, you fail to keep your doors locked even if you keep going out.

To avoid this mistake, you’ve got to keep your doors lock at all time. Although, it may seem impractical to keep door lock whenever you stepped out of the house for a minute. But for safety reasons, you’ve got to ensure that your doors are locked whenever you are in or out of the house.

4. Not Having a Guard Dog

Having a family dog does not guarantee that you have a guard dog. Because a guard dog is an effective deterrent to trespassers on your property. But, failing to have a guard dog can cause risk to the safety of your family and home.

To ensure the safety of your family and home, you need to get a guard dog. And the benefit of getting one is that it stays alert whether a security system is on or not.  It will naturally respond to anything out of the ordinary, alerting you in the process.

5. Not Having Lights Turned On At Night Times

It is understandable that you may want to save some bills on power. But failing to have lights turned on at night can make a burglar dressed in black blend into the shadows of the dark corners of the house and hide.

To avoid this mistake, always ensure that all lights at every corner of the house are turned on, especially at night times to discourage potential intruders.

6. Not Installing Home Alarm

A security alarm is used to detect intrusion – unauthorized entry – into a building or area. Not having a home alarm system installed, your home safety will be at risk.

Therefore, having a home alarm system will help you be aware of intruders and protect your home while you’re away or at sleep.

7. Not Maintaining Your Security System

Having a security system installed to ensure the safety of your home and family is a requirement. But failing to ensure it’s in working order can put your home at risk.

Always endeavour to maintain your security system on a regular basis to make sure it’s working properly. You should also have it checked and maintained by a professional.

8. Not Being Security Conscious

Your home is primarily among the three places where you and your family are prone to risk threats and danger. And not being conscious about these unforeseen events [threats and dangers] can put you and your family’s safety at risk.

To avoid this, you need to be security conscious by making it a habit to check your home surroundings and keep an eye out for any suspicious movement around your home. It never hurts to be cautious.

9. Not Keeping Door/Window Locks in Good Conditions

One thing is to keep doors/windows locked at all times. But having doors/windows with worn out locks can grant burglars easy access into your home and put your life at risk.

Always remember to regularly test and maintain your locks. If you don’t have a deadbolt lock, it’s highly recommended that you install a deadbolt lock on your doors/windows.

Mistakes do happen because no one, not even you is immune to mistakes, especially home security mistakes.

Burglars can be prevented if these home security mistakes (as shown above) are considered and avoided.

And whenever burglars are determined to burglarize your home, they will probably find a way. But as long as you keep avoiding these mistakes, your home will be safe and secure.

Not only will your home be safe and secure for you alone, it will be for your family as well.

How are you avoiding these mistakes? What other home security mistakes besides these are not listed here?
